Hampton Roads Community Action Program Hosting 50th Annual Awards Banquet
Delegate Matthew James (D) to deliver keynote speech.

The Hampton Roads Community Action Program (HRCAP), formerly known as the Office of Human Affairs, will be hosting the 50th Annual Awards Banquet at 7:00 pm on Thursday, May 19, 2016 at the Hampton Roads Convention Center (1610 Coliseum Drive, Hampton, VA 23666). This year's Keynote Speaker is The Honorable Matthew James who represents citizens of Norfolk, Portsmouth, Chesapeake and Suffolk in the Virginia House of Delegates. This event celebrates the agency’s mission to promote self-sufficiency within Hampton Roads low-income neighborhoods, and provides an opportunity to honor and recognize the many contributions made by individuals, organizations and businesses in the community.  Minimum donation is $65.

This year’s award recipients include the Dochiki Civic and Social Club, which will receive the Outstanding Community Service Award; Corporate Citizen of the Year Award recipient, Associated Contracting Services, Inc.; Faith-Based Community Service Award recipient, Gethsemane Baptist Church; Robert O. Bigelow Award recipient, Mrs. Janie King; Nakisha King, who will receive the Special Recognition Award; and the recipient of the Norvleate Downing Gross Achievement Award, Mr. Jerod Smith.

The keynote speaker, Delegate James, earned his B.A. in economics and mathematics from Hampton University and his MBA from J.L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University. He worked as the president and chief executive officer of the Peninsula Council for Workforce Development and director of economic development for the City of Portsmouth.

The funds raised support the vital programs that HRCAP operates in the community. Residents of the cities served by HRCAP (Newport News, Hampton and the south side cities of Chesapeake, Norfolk and Portsmouth) and those from surrounding communities are invited to celebrate and support our continuing mission "to plan, develop, implement and evaluate programs that foster self-sufficiency through educational, social, and economic development." It is only through the generosity of many individuals, organizations and businesses that the Hampton Roads Community Action Program can continue to provide the kinds of services and opportunities that will allow us to reach our ultimate goal: the elimination of poverty in our community and across the nation. Tickets are available online through Eventbrite (click here). For more information call 757-247-0379 ext. 323.
