Chamber Honors 110 Service Members at Military Recognition Reception

"It is very humbling to be here today," said Portsmouth Mayor John Rowe, as he addressed the 110 local service men and women being recognized at the Hampton Roads Chamber Military Recognition Reception on Friday, August 11th.

"The military is part of this region's DNA. There are only seven cities in the Commonwealth of Virginia with a population of 90,000 or more. We have 85,000 men and women in uniform in Hampton Roads, our great military makes Hampton Roads tick"  said Mayor Rowe.

Mayor Rowe gave the keynote address at the event where service members from over 40 commands and all five branches of the armed services throughout Hampton Roads received awards for their outstanding service. Special remarks were also made by Hampton Roads Chamber  President & CEO, Bryan K Stephens, John Whippen of the Sheraton Norfolk Waterside, and Ben Willis of GEICO (our Military Legacy Partner).

"Our country is safe because of you," said Willis, "our communities are better because of you."

As the Hampton Roads Chamber works to be an inspiring ignitor, powerful economic partner, and impactful advocate for our members, acknowledging the inspiring and important work of our service members and advocating on their behalf is of the utmost importance.

“You are part of the greatest military in the history of mankind," said Bryan K. Stephens, "we are honored to be in your presence.” Stephens also paid tribute to the military family members whose sacrifices too often go unrecognized.

The local military presence in Hampton Roads is a powerful economic partner for our region and the Chamber hosts two Military Recognition Receptions each year to recognize, honor and pay respect to local service men and women.

"You are the best of the best, you exemplify the core values of our military," said Mayor Rowe, "my hat is off to you and I salute you for what you've done."
