The Elizabeth River Tunnels Project is comprised of a new two-lane tunnel under the Elizabeth River parallel to the existing Midtown Tunnel; fire, life and safety modifications and upgrades to the existing Midtown Tunnel and Downtown Tunnels; interchange modifications in Norfolk and Portsmouth; and extending the MLK in Portsmouth from London Boulevard to I-264.
The Elizabeth River Tunnels Customer Service Center opened in Portsmouth at 700 Port Centre Parkway in October as a full-service E-ZPass and Pay by Plate facility.
Customers can visit the center to obtain an E-ZPass, register and service their Virginia E-ZPass account with an on-site agent, or service their ERT Pay by Plate account locally. The facility is open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
All electronic tolling starts Feb. 1, 2014 on the Downtown and Midtown Tunnels. Gantries over the roadway will collect the toll electronically, with no cash option and no stopping to pay at tollbooths.
Hampton Roads residents who get a new Virginia E-ZPass transponder (on a new or pre-existing E-ZPass account) by January 3, 2014 will get 5 free trips through the tunnels to use by June 30, 2014. Elizabeth River Tunnels has extended the “Five Free Trips” to February 1, 2014 for Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce members only. If you obtain your transponder between January 4 and February 1, 2014, forward this flyer with your E-ZPass transponder information to customerservice@DriveERT.biz by February 2, 2014 to qualify for five free trips through the Elizabeth River Tunnels to use by June 30, 2014.
