What are your business's core values, goals, and overall mission?

University of Phoenix provides access to higher education opportunities that enable students to develop knowledge and skills necessary to achieve their professional goals, improve the performance of their organizations, and provide leadership and service to their communities.

Mission: To improve the world through higher education.

Our Vision: Over the next five years, Apollo Education Group will make unemployed learners job-ready and employed learners more productive in their careers and communities. Through our education platform, we will improve the lives of millions of learners globally.

Core Values:

Each and every day, we are driven by a desire to meet the needs of our students, adult working learners who are motivated to improve their lives through higher education and a desire for a more rewarding career.

This desire and commitment is reflected by our employees, faculty and staff every day. It’s evident when you go the extra mile to help a student. It’s on display when you pitch in and help your co-workers finish a project. It’s visible when you treat others with respect and acknowledge our differences, yet come together to embrace our goals.

It’s our people that define our culture. It’s our work ethic that drives our passion for success.

Our Core Values:

Have A Passion For Learning: As representatives of a learning institution, we are lifelong learners. Education can happen in many forms and doesn’t have to be in the pursuit of a degree or classroom. We strive to share our knowledge with – and to learn from – our students, partners, and fellow employees.

Improve Society: The work we do is about more than business. We work to make a difference in our communities by providing access to education and by committing ourselves to improving the communities where we live and work.

Embrace Innovation: Creating new solutions. Making old solutions better. As we seek to achieve our mission, we should always push ourselves to innovate. Whether that means creating new products, updating a process or enhancing a service, we are not afraid to challenge ourselves to find a better way.

Act With Integrity: We’re honest and direct. And we make every effort to do the right thing. How about when no one is looking? Yes, even then. It’s who we are.

Treat Others As We Would Like to Be Treated: The Golden Rule. We value people and their differences. We are not robots working in an assembly line – we are human beings, and we treat one another with respect and dignity.

What are the greatest obstacles and/or challenges that your business has faced? How have you and your business overcome them?

We identified the Top 12 initiatives we need to accomplish to realize our vision for a University that’s right in sync with students and employers. These include initiatives such as customizing recruitment conversation, training and collateral by college, developing college-level marketing infrastructure, including brand forecasting and performance metrics and launching a ground campus investment strategy as a few examples.

Making a University of Phoenix education more affordable continues to be part of our strategy. We've rewarded the progress and merit of our students through the First Year Supplemental Grant and Phoenix Scholarship Reward Program and will only continue to gain ground in offering our students a valuable — and price-conscious — education.

In October 2012, we made the decision to begin phasing out 115 University of Phoenix local campuses and learning centers across the country. In 2013, restructuring our campus footprint became part of something even bigger — the University of Phoenix Strategy. The University is uniquely positioned with its national footprint to zero in on the needs of students in specific areas.

These initiatives are significant and it will take some time for the positive impacts to be fully realized. University of Phoenix is an institution that has been well established for decades and, while we are well on our way, a transformation of this magnitude will not happen overnight. We are keeping our focus on the longer-term objectives to achieve better outcomes and success for our students.

What accomplishments are you most proud of?

Recently we hosted a Women in Leadership Networking Symposium, a free service and open to the public. We had an overwhelming, positive response. Various panelists from the local community participated and shared insights regarding their own personal and business experiences. New partnerships were formed as a result of this networking opportunity and we continue to offer additional forums such as an upcoming “Building Your Brand” event.

What do you see for the future of your business?

We see continued growth and the implementation of new technology to support advanced learning. Additionally, we anticipate the build out and renovation of a new campus in Virginia Beach located at the Town Center in 2016.

Why are you a member of the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce?

Being a member of the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce offers us the opportunity to develop new relationships within the business community. It allows us the privilege of demonstrating our commitment to community service. Through partnerships, University of Phoenix helps companies prepare their workforce to navigate periods of change and growth and facilitate product and business innovation by infusing fresh ideas into their organizations.
