IKEA Announces New Location in Hampton Roads
IKEA representatives, along with Gov. Terry McAuliffe and Norfolk Mayor Paul Fraim, were on-hand today at Slover Library to announce the new location, which is slated to open in the summer of 2018.

IKEA representatives, along with Gov. Terry McAuliffe and Norfolk Mayor Paul Fraim, were on-hand today at Slover Library to announce the new location, which is slated to open in the summer of 2018. "IKEA's decision to build a new store is a game changer for Norfolk residents and the region," said Norfolk Mayor Paul D. Fraim. "IKEA is one of the most sought after retailers in the country and the largest furniture retailer in the world. The new IKEA location will be part of a new major retail hub situated adjacent to the Norfolk Premium Outlets currently under construction on Northampton Boulevard near the Interstate 64 interchange. The site would be IKEA’s second store in Virginia. 

Highlights:

  • The store is expected to open in the summer of 2018 in Norfolk.
  • IKEA says the store will create 250 jobs.
  • The new store will have 1,000 parking spaces.
  • Gov. Terry McAuliffe says the state put up $9.3 million toward the project.
  • McAuliffe says the Northampton Boulevard interchange at I-64 West will be widened from two lanes to four lanes. There will also be a new traffic signal with two lanes going left, and two lanes going right.
  • The merge lanes going on to I-64 West from Northampton Boulevard will be extended.
  • Of the changes, McAuliffe said, “All of this so more folks can come to IKEA.”
  • A 300-seat cafeteria-style restaurant will be a part of the new store.
  • The proposed store is 331,000 square-feet.
  • IKEA says it will be filing plans with the city of Norfolk, and is seeking approval by the fall of 2016.
  • IKEA says it would then hope to break ground on the store in the spring of 2017.
