Mid-Atlantic Maritime Academy Named Overall 2016 Hampton Roads Small Business of the Year
Mid-Atlantic Maritime Academy was named the regions 2016 Hampton Roads Small Business of the Year at the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce Small Business of the Year Awards on Tuesday, May 24 at the Virginia Beach Convention Center.

Mid-Atlantic Maritime Academy was named the region’s 2016 Hampton Roads Small Business of the Year at the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce Small Business of the Year Awards on Tuesday, May 24 at the Virginia Beach Convention Center.  Along with the recognition of the 2016 Small Business of the Year, Mid Atlantic Maritime Academy also received a $10,000 Chamber sponsorship package and entry into the Regional Small Business of the Year by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce to compete against the other Southeastern companies.  Captain Ed Nanartowich accepted the award on behalf of the Norfolk based company.

Mid Atlantic Maritime Academy (MAMA) opened in 2007 and is based out of Norfolk, VA. They train 50 to 100 students at a time and about 2,500 students are trained each year.  Samples of some of the courses they offer are advanced cargo handling and stowage movement, electronic navigation, and basic firefighting. MAMA is awarded for the history and philosophy of a solid and ethical business as well as operational management and profitability.

Young Entrepreneur Award (YEA!)

Max Greenhood, President/ Creative Director of RocketBike was awarded the 2016 Young Entrepreneur Award!  The award recognizes young entrepreneurs who have taken the risk of starting and running their own business in Hampton Roads.  The finalists for this award were Zack Miller, Founder of Hatch and Max Greenhood.  Candidates for this award were judged on business strategies, financial success and community involvement.  The winner was chosen by the judges as well as the Hampton Roads Business Community through votes that were casted on social media, the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce website and in Inside Business.

G&W Leadership Award

Shannon Kane, President/Chief Marketing Partner of EWR Management Group in Virginia Beach, received the G&W Leadership Award for her leadership, community involvement and all of her achievements. 

Winners were selected by a judging committee which included Caron Crouse, Market Managing Partner of the Hampton Roads offices, Dixon Hughes Goodman LLP; Joseph Donnelly, President of Donnelly Real Properties, LLP; Dr. A. Gregory Stone, MBA Program Director at Regent University; Nicole Harrell, Partner in the Norfolk Office of Kaufman & Canoles; Dr. Stephen Lanivich, Assistant Professor of Entrepreneurship and Management at Old Dominion University; and Susan Long-Molnar, President of Managing Communications Consulting. The winning businesses were chosen based on financial performance and business history, staff training and motivation, community involvement, business plan, growth, and customer service and satisfaction.
