Share some unique facts and business history? What makes your business stand out?  This is a family owned business with roots in Hampton Roads for over 65 years.  The company has gone through many changes.  For instance, the company has gone from Voice Dispatch to Computer Aided Dispatch to Full Computer Dispatch to App Dispatch.  Darwin said it is survival of the fittest.  He later expounded on this statement and said it is survival of those who can adapt.

What products or services do you offer companies or individuals?  Hampton Roads Transportation offers administration, dispatch and maintenance services to taxicab companies in our community.  This includes dispatch through our trademarked App-A-Cab, the premier smartphone transportation app in Hampton Roads.  Together with the taxicab companies it services, Hampton Roads Transportation dispatches on-demand transportation service throughout the region on a 24/7 basis.

What are the greatest obstacles and/or challenges that your business has faced? How have you and your business overcome them?  The greatest challenge is the taxicab industry’s reputation as a whole. To overcome this challenge, we differentiate ourselves by providing late model vehicles equipped with video cameras, emphasizing driver safety (all drivers attend the National Safety Council’s Defensive Driving Course and have police background checks), supplying wheelchair accessible taxicabs, and emphasizing the hundreds of corporate accounts that contract for our services. In addition, we focus on service, continuous improvement to our systems, training of staff, and direct involvement with our community.

What accomplishments are you most proud of?  We created the first smart phone transportation app in Hampton Roads and are the largest private employer of the blind in the region. The taxicab companies for which we provide administration have received numerous honors through the years such as the 2013 and 2014 Governor’s Safety and Public Transportation Award, the 2013 Taxicab Operator of the Year award from the national Taxicab, Limousine, and Paratransit Association (TLPA), the 2013 Insight Enterprise Trailblazer Award for bringing wheelchair accessible taxicab service to the peninsula, and the 2014 Virginia Beach Hospitality Award.  In addition, in 2011, our president had the honor of being chosen the first recipient of the Outstanding Women in Transportation Award from the TLPA.

What do you see for the future of your business?  Ourtaxi service will remain the premier on-demand personal transportation alternative in Coastal Virginia, with more fuel efficient vehicles, enhanced dispatch capabilities, increased use of App-A-Cab, and continuous expansion to match the growth within our service area.

Why are you a member of the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce?  We rely on HRCC to review each year the 3,000 Virginia General Assembly bills for potential impact (both direct and indirect) on our business.  We also rely on the Chamber to act on those bills that have been introduced which will either enhance or adversely affect the business community.  Also, the Chamber’s support of initiatives that advances economic development in our region helps to raise the tide that lifts all boats.
