The newest film showing at the Virginia Aquarium IMAX 3D Theater is Penguins 3D: An Epic Journey, One Special Penguin, A Family Tale, A Tale of Love and Survival in Penguin City. Narrated by David Attenborough, this film celebrates the destiny of a special King Penguin, who returns to his birthplace in the sub-Antarctic. The Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center is an accredited member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, and the Alliance of Marine Mammal Parks and Aquariums whose mission is conservation through education. The first Virginia Green Conference & Green Travel Star Awards Celebration was held at the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center December 3-4. Over 75 guests attended and had the opportunity to participate in educational workshops, listen to knowledgeable “green” speakers, visit a Virginia Green Market Expo, attend an awards luncheon and volunteer for a clean-up project. Additionally, the “green event” included recycling and composting with no waste going to a landfill. Virginia Green is the state’s campaign to promote green practices in tourism. It is a voluntary, recognition program that is run through a unique partnership between the Virginia Tourism Corporation, the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, and the Virginia Hospitality & Travel Association. Started in 2007, Virginia Green now has more than 1500 participants, including hotels, restaurants, attractions, conference centers, visitor centers, wineries, parks, campgrounds, and many other supporting organizations and businesses.

The Virginia Sports Hall of Fame & Museum held their 9th Annual Student Athlete Achievement Awards Banquet on Sunday, December 1. The event honored some of the state’s great student athletes nominated by their coaches and administrators both at the middle and high school levels. The four awards categories were: girls 6th through 8th grade, girls 9th through 12th grade, boys 6th through 8th grade and boys 9th through 12th grade. Of the 18 finalists, four students were awarded Student Athlete of the Year awards: Emily Crocco, an eighth grader at Robious Middle School in Chesterfield, Malique Hawkins, a seventh grader at Atlantic Shores Christian School in Chesapeake, Macy Mears, a senior at Nansemond-Suffolk Academy in Suffolk, and Ryan Thomas, a senior at Albemarle High School in Charlottesville. The Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center will feature Stranding Response Research Coordinator Susan G. Barco for the November 17 Watts Conservation Speaker Series. Barco will present, “Dolphin Die-Off: Unraveling the Mystery” at 2 p.m. in the IMAX Theater. The session is free and refreshments will be served following the program. Since July of 2013, more than 650 bottlenose dolphins have died in the mid-Atlantic region from New York through North Carolina. On September 14, thirty children and their parents cleaned up the campus of the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center, as part of the first Whole Foods Market Kids’ Day of Service. The Aquarium and two other local organizations competed for this opportunity through a Whole Foods Market (WFM) Virginia Beach Facebook campaign. United Way launches $18.7 Million Campaign with 22nd annual day of giving!
