According to a press release-
Michael Camden, enrollment coordinator in Hampton, Va., for TROY Online, has won Troy University's Vergil Parks McKinley Award.
Camden, who has been employed by the University since 2012, received the award from Dr. Jack Hawkins, Jr., Chancellor, during a ceremony on Friday in the Hawkins-Adams-Long Hall of Honor on the Troy Campus. He was nominated by Roger A. Smith, area coordinator for TROY Online in Hampton Roads.
The McKinley Award is the highest honor that Troy University gives to a non-faculty staff member. It is presented quarterly to an employee who has demonstrated outstanding attitude, innovation and work ethic. The award was established by the late John McKinley, former Texaco CEO, in honor of his father, Vergil Parks McKinley, who was a Troy University professor during the early 20th century and was key to the development of the University's athletic program. Winners of this award receive an engraved clock and a $1,000 stipend.
In a letter of nomination, Smith lauded Camden for supporting the University's strategic initiative focused on service to military students. Among Camden's many efforts, he serves as both president of the Virginia Advisory Council on Military Education and chair of the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce's Armed Forces Committee.
In addition, Camden has taken on additional responsibilities of recruitment -- due to the retirement of one employee and the maternity leave of another -- rearranging his schedule to make visits to military installations in the Hampton Roads area.
"Mike's labor is bearing fruit in that Hampton Roads numbers for prospective students and enrollments have grown," Smith said. "His efforts are greatly appreciated, and he is highly deserving of the honor of the Vergil Parks McKinley Award."
Camden said the award came as a huge surprise since he thought his trip to the Troy Campus was for a meeting.
"This was a big shock," he said. "As Dr. Hawkins was talking, I actually tapped my boss who was sitting beside me and said, ‘I think you are getting an award.' Receiving the McKinley Award is a tremendous honor and a wonderful surprise. I just can't thank everyone enough for honoring me in this manner."
