Senator Harry Blevins, a Chesapeake Republican who represents the 14th District of Virginia, will retire on August 5.
Delegate John Cosgrove, who has represented Chesapeake in the General Assembly for the past 12 years, has announced his candidacy for the State Senate. During the past two decades, Delegate Cosgrove has demonstrated strong leadership and advocacy for businesses, property rights, and the limited and proper use of resources in the Commonwealth as a delegate and a member of the Chesapeake City Council. Delegate Cosgrove has consistently earned a top ranking as one of the most effective advocates for businesses in the Commonwealth by Virginia Free, a non-partisan business advocacy group.
Furthermore, Delegate Cosgrove, has been actively engaged throughout the last decade in attempting to solve the Commonwealth‘s Transportation funding problem that has plagued Hampton Roads and severely impacted this region’s ability to conduct business. In the 2013 General Assembly session, Delegate Cosgrove strongly supported the passage of HB 2313 and worked with Governor McDonnell and members of both parties to pass the first new transportation funding since 1986. He heeded the Chamber’s call to action on this critically important issue.
In an email to Chamber members in Chesapeake on April 24, Shep Miller, Chair of the Chamber’s Political Action Committee, urged participation in a special Legislative District Party Canvas on May 9 from 5-8pm to nominate a Republican candidate for the seat. Voting will take place at both the Chesapeake Golf Club (1201 Club House Dr.) and the Russell Memorial Library (2808 Taylor Road). Show your voter registration card or picture ID.
On April 29, Senator Blevins said, "While I look forward to this new chapter, it is with a heavy heart that I will no longer have the honor of serving people that I have come to care so deeply about. Though I have decided to retire from the Senate, I feel a responsibility to make sure my constituents continue to have a strong voice in the General Assembly. In my mind, there is only one candidate worthy of serving the 14th Senate District, my friend Delegate John Cosgrove."
The special election for Sen. Blevins’ seat will be on August 6.
