Chamber Hosts Military Recognition Reception to Honor Service Members

The Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce hosted its Military Recognition Reception August 9 at the Norfolk Waterside Marriott – honoring nearly 100 members of all branches of service.

The reception, held to honor hardworking men and women of the military, recognized personnel from local commands. Service members were joined at the reception by their families, military leadership, elected officials, and businessmen and women from the region. The Chamber holds Military Recognition Receptions twice a year.

Congressman Bobby Scott, U.S. House of Representatives, was the keynote speaker for the event and was complimentary of the U.S. armed forces. Scott, who served in the Massachusetts National Guard, said he was impressed with the professionalism and commitment to service of military personnel.

“The United States is fortunate to have some of the best trained, best equipped military forces in the world,” Scott said. “Each of you took it upon yourselves to enlist in the armed services. Our men and women in uniform sacrifice so much.”

Scott added the nation still faces many challenges, including sequestration and draw down in Afghanistan.

“Americans still have the resolve to meet these challenges,” Scott said. “I know the men and women we are honoring today exemplify this resolve because of your honorable service and we leave our nation better for our children and grandchildren.” Scott also pointed out the sacrifices made by those who take care of the family while the service member is deployed.

Scott reassured the service members that no matter what is going on in the political arena, that all parties support the military.

“I can assure you that Democrats, Republicans or Independents all agree we have a solemn obligation as a nation to honor and care for you and your families – especially when you return from combat,” Scott said. “I commend each and every one of you for your service and sacrifices you make for our nation every day. He said that each honoree represents the very best of the nation and every American is in debt to them for their sacrifices. He added that they should be proud of what they have accomplished in their careers.

“Today, we recognize more than 100 members of the military,” Scott said. “Every one of you has been singled out by your commands for your exemplary service, professionalism, and dedication to our nation. You and your families should be vastly proud. Congratulations to each  one of you and I thank you again for a job well done.”
