Clancy & Theys Construction Company
President's Name: Bill Goggins
President's Title: Vice President & CEO, Virginia Division
What are your business's core values, goals, and overall mission?
Clancy & Theys Construction Company builds high-quality buildings for our clients. We pride ourselves on projects and relationships built upon integrity, quality and service. That attitude is culturally-ingrained at Clancy & Theys. Our ultimate goal is to make our clients successful. We want our work to fulfill their highest levels of need and imagination. The quality of their experience with Clancy & Theys is just as important as how they feel about the physical product. We want our clients to be happy they chose us, and then to choose us again. With both construction work and relationships, we always aim to do the right thing, the right way. That’s The Clancy Way.
Share some unique facts and business history? What makes your business stand out?
We are a family run business, owned & operated since 1949 by the Clancy family. The Clancys consider every employee a member of their extended family. They extend to their employees the same level of trust as they do to their own family, and from this stems our culture of integrity, quality and service. Our employees recognize the confidence the Clancy family has in them and they strive to exceed those expectations in all facets of their jobs. This is the main reason why our employees remain with the Company and why (we believe) our customers return to us time and again, year after year.
What products or services do you offer companies or individuals?
Clancy & Theys is a diversified general contractor that provides construction management and design-build services throughout the Southeast. We pride ourselves on projects and relationships built upon integrity, quality and service. We specialize in a collaborative approach with fast track scheduling to bring our clients' visions to life.
What are the greatest obstacles and/or challenges that your business has faced? How have you and your business overcome them?
Although the impact on our firm was not immediate, the recession of 2007/8 was difficult for us, as it was for most in our industry. We revisited our strategy and realized we had to quickly adapt. We were able to retain many of our employees by expanding our market and taking on work that we had not
historically considered because they were smaller projects or not in our “sweet spot.”
What accomplishments are you most proud of?
Clancy & Theys’ team approach is my greatest source of pride. Our employees are some of the brightest
and best in the industry. It is because of them and their dedication to the Company, our values and goals that we have achieved our strong reputation not only in the Hampton Roads, but also throughout the industry. Clients such as Canon Virginia, Dollar Tree and Regent University have returned to partner with us on multiple projects because of the relationships they have built with our team over the years. As a result, we have achieved great successes like the Greenbrier Casino, the Wells Fargo Building in Downtown Norfolk and Portsmouth Judicial Center.
What do you see for the future of your business?
Technology continues to be the game-changer in the construction industry. We are seeing the impact of this through major improvements in our delivery systems and in increased productivity of our workforce. Offsite pre-fabrication and modular construction will continue to grow at a steady pace, as will the demand for skills and knowledge to maintain these new, sophisticated systems.
Why are you a member of the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce?

years. During this time we have been able to experience the impact that the Hampton Roads Chamber
of Commerce has had on our Community. We choose to be a member of the Hampton Roads Chamber
of Commerce because we firmly believe in and support their mission.
