For the first time, the Hampton Roads Sports Commission (HRSC), an affiliate of the Hampton Roads Chamber, hosted theCollege Recruiting, Eligibility, and Compliance Forum (REC) for college-bound student athletes. The forum was held on February 13 at the Founders Inn and Spa in Virginia Beach.
The guest speaker was Dr. Dennis Thomas, Commissioner of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. Dr. Thomas shared details on “Finding the Right Fit”, and how self discipline can keep students grounded throughout their college career. Dr. Thomas informed the audience that finding the right fit includes many aspects, including: education, environment, team atmosphere, and athletic expectations.
Student-athletes and their parents learned the ins and outs of the recruiting process from local Division I, II & III colleges. Attendees were given important tips for higher education, emphasizing that academics are the main focus and that willpower is very important. There was also a college and vendor fair where student-athletes and their parents talked one-on- one with college and business representatives.
Morgan Lang, Executive Director of the HRSC , said, “It quickly became clear with more than 200 attendees, that the eligibility & recruiting process for collegiate athletics is a ‘hot topic’. I remember when I was being recruited, and when I recruited student-athletes as a collegiate coach. It can feel very overwhelming and there are a lot of steps! Our goal for REC was to provide a platform for parents, coaches, & guidance counselors to get information directly from the NCAA and institutions on what to expect and what to do. We hope that everyone walked away from tonight with several take aways and feel more comfortable assisting their child, player or friend through this very exciting process!”
