Small Business Development Center Satellite Office Established in Chesapeake

The Chesapeake Department of Economic Development and the Small Business Development Center of Hampton Roads, Inc. (SBDC) are pleased to announce the establishment of a satellite office at the new Economic Development Department location.  The SBDC, an affiliated program of the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce, provides management counseling, information, technical assistance, education, and training to small businesses in the region’s 18 cities and counties.

The new office, located at 676 Independence Parkway, Suite 200, Chesapeake, VA 23320, will be staffed by SBDC counselors in order to meet the counseling and information needs of both existing and prospective business owners.  In addition to the new office facility, the SBDC will provide a 50 volume Entrepreneur Library which can be accessed and checked out by the city’s small business owners.

Steven Wright, the Department’s Director, stated that the need to provide ongoing support to the city’s small business community cannot be overstated, especially in these uncertain economic times.  “When the SBDC relocated from Chesapeake to downtown Norfolk, we looked for a way to ensure the SBDC will continue to have a presence in Chesapeake to meet the needs of the businesses in the city. The Department’s move to its new location presented us with an opportunity that could not be missed.  Co-locating an office of the SBDC within the Department’s offices enables our small business community to access information and support in one central location.  It also allows our staff to enhance our relationship with members of the small business community and be more responsive to their needs.”

Jim Carroll, the SBDC’s Executive Director, sees this as a “win” for both organizations and the community as a whole.  “This office will help extend the SBDC’s services to the city of Chesapeake and its business owners in an effective and cost-efficient manner.  As the goals of both organizations are virtually the same when it comes to serving both existing and prospective small business owners, it makes absolute sense for the Center to be in this location,” stated Carroll.

To schedule an appointment at with an SBDC counselor at the Chesapeake office, please contact the Economic Development Department’s main telephone number at (757) 382-8040.
