(Recieved from Virginians for Better Transportation)
The Virginia General Assembly cannot wait any longer to address one of Virginia's most pressing issues - the need for long-term transportation funding.
Visit our site today to contact your General Assembly members and urge them to pass a sustainable transportation funding solution NOW during the legislative session. It takes less than a minute.
A recent survey released yesterday by Public Opinion Strategies and Frederick Polls for the Virginia Transportation Construction Alliance finds the majority of Virginians, 83 percent, agree it is important that General Assembly members pass a transportation plan this session that will address the transportation funding issue.
Other key findings of the statewide transportation survey reveal -
Currently more than $400 million is transferred from its construction budget just to meet maintenance needs each year. Continuing basic maintenance needs are estimated at more than $1 billion.
Overall, sustainable funding will help to improve mobility, lessen congestion and increase safety - all factors that will help improve the quality of life in Virginia for today and years to come. The Governor's proposal specifically would generate 20,000 jobs, create more than $2.5 billion in economic activity in the Commonwealth and generate more than $150 million in new tax revenues.
The Governor's proposed plan would close the shortfall in the state's road maintenance account and inject more than $3 billion into Virginia's highways, rails and transit systems during the next five years and continue to provide funding in the years to follow. The survey also shows there is strong support for the Governor's plan across party lines.
Bottom line - Virginians have expressed concern and voiced their overwhelming support for a sustainable, long-term transportation funding solution. It's time for the General Assembly to act.
