The Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center in Virginia Beach was recently awarded a First Place 2014 Pinnacle Award by the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) Hampton Roads Chapter for its program “A Crisis Response to the Dolphin Unusual Mortality Event.” The award was accepted by the Aquarium’s Public Relations Manager Joan M. Barns.

Last year Virginia Beach was at the epicenter of the largest bottlenose dolphin die-off ever recorded. “As the event grew so did the curiosity of the media. And as the public responded with increased interest, the media beast had to be fed,” said Barns.
