Four democratic incumbents resigned on June 30. With the resignations of Delegate Bob Brink, Delegate Algie Howell, Senator Henry Marsh, and Senator Phil Puckett, Virginia will now have at least three special elections on August 19. The filing deadline for each special election is Monday, July 7.

Delegate Howell, from the 90th district (City of Norfolk and City of Virginia Beach), as well as Delegate Brink, have left vacancies open on the House Appropriation Committee of the House of Representatives. According to Virginia FREE, the strongest candidate so far is Delegate Matthew James from Hampton Roads who currently has seats on General Laws, Finance, and Ag- Chesapeake - Natural Resources.

Another competitive race is going on in the House Democratic Caucus for the position of Caucus Chairman. Delegate Mark Sickles is stepping down from that position in order to focus on other professional obligations. The two leading candidates for Caucus Chairman are Delegates Scott Surovell and Eileen Filler-Corn both from Northern Virginia. At this stage, Filler-Corn has in the inside track to take Sickles’ position.

Voting takes place on Tuesday, August 19. Click here to check your voting location.
