ODU engineering dean pushes for diversity to combat looming talent shortage

Engineering is on the brink of a crisis.

At least it could be, if the field doesn’t attract more talent from underrepresented populations like women and African Americans, according to a recent study from Deloitte Consulting and The Manufacturing Institute.

From 2015-2025, around 2 million, or 57 percent, of 3.5 million U.S. manufacturing jobs will go unfilled, unless steps are taken to close this skills gap.

 

That coming shortage is something Stephanie Adams, dean of Old Dominion University’s Frank Batten College of Engineering and Technology, wants to help fix.

The 52-year-old Norfolk native has spent the past two decades in engineering education and leadership. She became ODU’s first female engineering dean in 2016, and only the third black woman in history to lead an accredited U.S. engineering school.
