A group of business leaders and citizens gathered at the Amtrak station in Norfolk on June 5 for the announcement of the formation of Mobility Matters, an advocacy movement designed to engage citizens and promote regional cooperation on the future of transportation in Hampton Roads.   Mobility Matters will be reaching out to the public through a series of meetings to gather feedback and support for what organizers see as a critical component to the future of the local economy – a reliable and seamless transportation network.

Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce President & CEO Bryan K. Stephens is serving as the group’s Co-Chair, alongside state Delegate Matthew James, President & CEO of the Peninsula Council for Workforce Development.  Stephens is committed to such volunteer work as a means to further advance pro-business positions on matters important to the Chamber’s membership body.

"The regions that are growing are the regions that are moving,” said Stephens. “Getting people and goods in and out of Hampton Roads and efficient and effective mobility throughout Hampton Roads is paramount to regional economic prosperity.  Our goal is to deliver a vision of mobility with a strong business case for enhanced economic competitiveness and quality of life for the people of our region.”

Robbyn Gayer of UBS Financial Services is spearheading the group, formed in the wake of a series of recent meetings of concerned business and community leaders. The meetings were motivated by how much a region’s economic vitality and attractiveness is judged by the effectiveness and efficiency of its transportation.

"Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) is pleased to partner with Mobility Matters on this exciting new initiative,” said William Harrell, President and CEO of Hampton Roads Transit. “In tandem with

Mobility Matters, HRT will be kicking off a new effort called Connect Hampton Roads to get input on what kind of transit improvements the region wants. We look forward to becoming a more strategic and integral part of the long-term transportation solution for Hampton Roads.”

The public is invited to track the progress of the organization, find out about upcoming meetings when scheduled and sign up for updates online at www.mobilitymattershr.com.
