The Chamber’s monthly Portsmouth Division Board meeting was held on June 15 at APM Terminals in Portsmouth. The group got a behind the scenes aerial tour of the facility by Joanne Jenkins, Terminal Services Manager. The presentation started with a brief video showing how the terminals were created and built in three years. APM Terminals is the largest privately funded marine container terminal in the United States and the largest investment in a company-owned container terminal in the nation as well. It is also the only terminal in the United States and South America that is automated. Jenkins explained that although the terminal is automated, it still brings employment and prosperity to the region. “One of our main goals is to grow the port of Virginia,” she said.
APM Terminals is a 576 acre terminal that is heralded as the most technologically advanced marine cargo facility in the Americas. With 4,000 linear feet of berth and 3.3 miles of on-site rail with links to NS and CSX, the highly automated facility boasts a current capacity of 1.4 million TEUs annually, with room for further expansion.
