The Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce hosted the Virginia Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives (VACCE) Annual Meeting held June 23-24 in Norfolk. As the 2010-2011 VACCE President, Sylvia Haines, Senior Vice President of Organizational Development, Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce, presided over the meeting. Nearly 60 Chamber staff members from throughout Virginia attended the two-day conference, titled “One Vision: Connecting through Economic Development.”
The annual meeting is a great opportunity for Chamber executives to network and share ideas. In addition, speakers included: John Broderick, President of Old Dominion University; Barry DuVal, President & CEO of the Virginia Chamber of Commerce; Alisa Bailey, President & CEO of Virginia Tourism Corporation; Aubrey Layne, Director of the Commonwealth Transportation Board; and Stan Scott, Executive Director of the Virginia National Defense Industrial Authority.
On Thursday afternoon, attendees enjoyed a cruise, sponsored by the Virginia Port Authority, aboard the Carrie B which set sail from Norfolk’s Waterside Dock on a 1 ½ hour tour providing a maritime view of the Norfolk and Portsmouth waterfronts, Port of Virginia and Norfolk naval base. That evening, Catherine Sutton, Executive Director of the Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce, was named as the Chamber Executive of the Year.
At the conclusion of the Annual Meeting, Sylvia Haines passed the president’s gavel to Vicki Gardner, President of the Smith Mountain Lake Chamber, who will serve as the 2011-2012 VACCE President. The 2012 VACCE Annual Meeting will take place next June at Smith Mountain Lake.
