Chamber Seeks Nominations for April Military Recognition Reception

Event Description

The Military Recognition Reception is an informal opportunity for the business community to provide additional recognition to our service members and thank them personally for a job well done. 

Special remarks will be provided by by Dr. Bruce Brunson, Executive Director of Tidewater Community College’s Center for Military and Veterans Education (CMVE).  Dr. Brunson enlisted in the U.S Navy upon high school graduation in 1969 and was later selected to attend the U.S. Naval Academy. He retired in 1995 as a Commander after 22 years of service as a Naval Aviator, finishing his military career as the Commanding Office and Professor of Naval Science with the Naval ROTC at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas. After retiring from the Navy, Dr. Brunson completed his PhD in 1996 at Texas Tech in Consumer Economics and Environmental Design with emphases in Certified Financial Planner (CFP) programs. His first position after receiving his Ph.D. was as an assistant professor in Family Financial Management, in the Department of Near Environments at Virginia Tech. He established and taught the CFP® education programs at Virginia Tech. Dr. Brunson then spent 9 years as an Executive Director over all Military and Government Programs for Florida Community College at Jacksonville. Prior to joining TCC, Dr. Brunson worked as a consultant for the Department of Defense, several major colleges, companies, and non-profits in two areas of expertise; projects to expand personal finance education and assisting colleges to become truly military helpful. His work included establishing the Personal Finance and Transition Directive for the Office of The Secretary of Defense to oversee a large national project to expand personal finance education and support to service members and their families. During this time he also was a visiting professor at Virginia Tech and Texas Tech University teaching graduate and undergraduate courses in personal finance.   

Dr. Brunson holds a M.S. in Computer and Information Technology and a M.B.A. from Webster University. He graduated in 1974 from the U.S. Naval Academy with B.S. in operations analysis.
