More than 25 Local Businesses in Running for Small Business of the Year Award

The Chamber’s 27th annual Hampton Roads Small Business of the Year (SBOY) Awards will be held Thursday, May 19 during National Small Business Week which recognizes the contributions of small businesses to the economic well-being of America. National Small Business Week will honor the estimated 27.2 million small businesses throughout the country. More than half of Americans either own or work for a small business. They also create 60-80% of new jobs in the country.

The Small Business of the Year Awards recognizes small businesses for their achievements in each Southside city (Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Virginia Beach, and Suffolk). There will be five SBOY city winners, and one overall regional winner. The Chamber will also present awards for “Top 10 to Watch,” and the Impressions in Print Leadership Award. The Chamber convenes a panel of judges to select the winners.

The “Top 10 to Watch” awards will be given to South Hampton Roads for-profit emerging businesses with fewer than 99 employees, in business for six years or less as of January 1, 2011, but more than one year, or should have introduced a new product or entered a new market in the last five years. The Impressions in Print Leadership Award will be presented to an individual demonstrating leadership, impact on workplace culture, community service and involvement, professional achievement, and perseverance.
