What are your business's core values, goals, and overall mission? Whether you are dealing with organizational change to compete in a changing business environment, struggling with sales or multi-generational teams, launching new services or products, or trying to engage employees more effectively, you are probably finding that at least 90% of your critical issues involve communications. My lifelong commitment to assisting businesses, organizations, and individuals is my mission.

My core values are what drive MCC’s success: Honesty, passion for learning, commitment, creative thinking, trust, family and simplicity.

What products or services do you offer companies or individuals? Though we have spent the first 13 years in business providing strategy and implementation for marketing, PR, and internal communications, we are moving in a more strategic focus for assisting businesses and individuals to change, grow, and meet their goals. Our products and services will focus more on consulting, coaching, strategic planning and training to assist businesses and individuals to engage and gain outcomes effectively with their customers, employees, partners and targeted government and industry communities.

What are the great obstacles and/or challenges that your business has faced? How have you and your business overcome them? MCC has always had a business model designed to support a limited number of clients at any given time, which has resulted in as few as three months and at most, business relationships which began well before the business’s start in 2002. Like many businesses such client shifts makes it difficult to keep contractors engaged or when there are limited resources, the busy times can impact customer service. Of course, the recession, sequestration, and other economic stresses on clients always rolls downhill to their vendors and contractors. Though many professionals in our industry suffered through layoffs from large corporations and decided to create their own business, I was fortunate to have a history of management experience in very large corporations with multiple business units or locations as well as agency experience, giving me a leg up in a lot of competencies to be flexible and often times nimble for the operational level of a sole proprietorship. I also understood lean operations, never once getting a loan to run the business during more difficult times.

What accomplishments are you most proud of? I am most proud of accomplishments which have given back or really helped others to reach their goals.Finding corruption in a Head Start program I worked in straight out of college, and speaking out so that the funding stability and operation could continue to help poor families was worthwhile. Starting the first modern dance company in Hampton Roads (through Virginia Beach Parks and Recreation) and watching kids who had never danced or performed on a stage, get so excited and bring such joy to their families was also important to me. Watching interns blossom under Managing Communications and then go on to better positions is another win-win! That carries over, of course, to the numerous times when a client event or marketing strategy has positively impacted the brand or employees or managers attending one of my workshops has used the skills learned and benefited from their new abilities to communicate with their peers or leadership team.

What do you see for the future of your business? I am really excited about expanding beyond Hampton Roads and Virginia to support businesses and associations with communications training, presentations, and consulting services. On the home front, I believe I can assist our businesses and organizations to develop marketing and employee communications processes, training and strategies to be much more effective. I also intend to produce products to support the business, both e-books and published nonfiction, as well as train-the-trainer in communications tools.

Why are you a member of the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce? I have been a member and active, either through my management 1980s. I found the organization an excellent resource for developing my leadership skills, networking, and engaging in activities to support the economic stability of our region. I cannot think of another organization that could offer as much in these areas!
