Virginia Beach First Citizen of Virginia Beach - Nominations Open

Virginia Beach First Citizen of Virginia Beach - Nominations Open
The VB Jaycees invite you to submit a nominee for the 2018 First Citizen of Virginia Beach Award.

Do you know someone worthy of being named the next First Citizen of Virginia Beach? Well first you might be asking yourself, “What does it mean to be a First Citizen?” In our minds, a First Citizen has been, is and always will be:

● A person who has relentlessly supported local business and citizen empowerment

● Someone who has been a positive role model in the Virginia Beach community

● A unique individual who may have been influential in the growth of the city

● Someone who lives and resides in Virginia Beach

● And above all else, someone who embodies the United States Jaycees Creed

So, “Why nominate someone? What’s in it for them?” The First Citizen of Virginia Beach Award has been a distinctive honor for the past 68 years. Mr. James Kontopanos kicked off the inaugural event as the first honoree in 1950. Since then, men and women of all ages, backgrounds and contributions have been nominated. Most recently Mr. Morgan Davis accepted the award for his continual contributions to our society. Some of the honorees in the past have gone on to hold more prominent positions within the city and state, but our local ceremony has been “the most precious honor” for many. Joining the ranks of some of the most humble and influential people in Virginia Beach is an honor in and of itself. To nominate someone, please submit a one page resume outlining the person’s background, roles or contributions to Virginia Beach as well as at least three personal references that can support the nominee’s character. While the summary can be delivered to the VB Jaycees in any format, we’ve created a template you are welcome, not obligated to use. The content, not the creative presentation, is what thenomination committee will use to review applicants.

Finally, to keep with tradition, we like to keep nominations a secret. As in, the person being honored doesn’t typically realize their up for review. We like to believe this upholds the integrity of the awards and ensures the honorees are being submitted for selfless reasons.

Please visit the VB Jaycees website (www.vbjaycees.org) for more information and for the application form. Submissions will be accepted until December 7th, 2018 and may be sent to VBJCFirstCitizen@gmail.com
