Aubrey LayneAt a news conference on November 22 at the Norfolk International Terminals, Governor-elect Terry McAuliffe named Aubrey Layne as his Secretary of Transportation.

Layne, a member of the Commonwealth Transportation Board since 2009, is a Virginia Beach resident with a long history in the Hampton Roads community.

“The Governor-elect has made a more modern, efficient transportation system a principal goal of his administration, and I am ready to take on that challenge and hit the ground running to do what we need to do to improve our transportation infrastructure,” he said.

Layne has served governors of both the democratic and republican parties. In 2009, then-governor Timothy M. Kaine (D) named Layne to the transportation board. And in 2010, Gov. Robert F. McDonnell (R) put Layne on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Tunnel Commission. Layne became chair in 2012.

During the news conference, McAuliffe and Layne commended McDonnell and the General Assembly for passing a $1.4 billion-a-year transportation funding bill this year, which will provide the commonwealth with the first infusion of roads-and-rail cash in nearly a generation.

Layne is president of Achievable Dream Academies in Newport News, a partnership between public schools and local businesses aimed at helping at-risk students succeed.  Prior to this position, Layne was the President of Great Atlantic Real Estate Property Management.

Layne is active in many community and business organizations including the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce.  He was a member of the first LEAD Hampton Roads class, graduating from the program in 1989.  LEAD Hampton Roads, the leadership program of the Hampton Roads Chamber, presented Layne with its First Citizen Award in 2010.  In 2013, he served as Chair-elect of the Chamber’s Virginia Beach Division.

The Chamber’s President & CEO Bryan Stephens, said, “The Hampton Roads Chamber congratulates Aubrey Layne on his new appointment.  As a businessman in Hampton Roads with a wealth of knowledge on the transportation issues impacting our region, we believe he was an excellent selection as Secretary of Transportation.”
