The Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce Presents Military Citizen of the Year Award on October 8

NORFOLK, VA – The Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce is proud to host the 2010 Military Citizen of the Year Luncheon.  This annual event is held in conjunction with Fleet Week, the Navy’s Annual birthday celebration.  The luncheon will be held Wednesday, October 8, from 12:00pm-2:00pm at the Norfolk Waterside Marriott, located at 235 E. Main St., Norfolk.  At the luncheon, the annual Samuel T. Northern Military Citizen of the Year Award will be presented to the enlisted military individual whose personal and public contributions have had the most positive effect on the Hampton Roads community.  The luncheon also gives the Hampton Roads business community the opportunity to show its appreciation for the local military presence here.

Rear Admiral Mark Boensel, Commander Navy Region Mid-Atlantic; City of Norfolk Mayor Paul Fraim; and Kerri Furey, WAVY-TV 10 news anchor, will give remarks.  Furey will serve as the keynote speaker.  She currently anchors “Wavy News 10 Today" and "Wavy News 10 Midday", and also co-anchors "The Hampton Roads Show.”  Furey began her career in broadcasting as an enlisted sailor in the United States Navy.

Samuel T. Northern was a local businessman who devoted most of his life to strengthening the relationship between the local community and the military. This award is given annually to recognize the military citizen who has made the most significant contribution in the area of community service. Each year, commands based throughout Hampton Roads are asked to nominate individuals for this honor. Members of the Chamber’s Armed Forces Committee then select the winner based upon their full, active and sustained participation in activities that benefit the community. Nominees are involved in everything from coaching Little League® teams, youth mentoring, fundraising, emergency medical services, and many, many more community programs.
