The Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce will host the 2014 Military Citizen of the Year Luncheon. This annual event is held in conjunction with Fleet Week, the Navy's Annual birthday celebration. Congressman Randy Forbes will serve as the Keynote Speaker.

The Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce is proud to host the 2014 Military Citizen of the Year Luncheon.  This annual event is held in conjunction with Fleet Week, the Navy’s Annual birthday celebration.  The luncheon will be held Thursday, October 9, from 12:00pm-1:30pm at the Norfolk Waterside Marriott, located at 235 E. Main St., Norfolk.  At the luncheon, the annual Samuel T. Northern Military Citizen of the Year Award will be presented to the enlisted military individual whose personal and public volunteer contributions have had the most positive effect on the Hampton Roads community.

Because the military community is such a vital part of our region, the Chamber recognizes the accomplishments of local military personnel throughout the year.  The luncheon gives the Hampton Roads business community the opportunity to show its appreciation for the local military presence. This year, commands based throughout Hampton Roads nominated 37 individuals for this honor. Members of the Chamber’s Armed Forces Committee then select the winner based upon their full, active and sustained participation in activities that benefit the community. Samuel T. Northern was a local businessman who devoted most of his life to strengthening the relationship between the local community and the military. Since 1951, this award has been given annually to recognize the military citizen who has made the most significant contribution in the area of community service.

The keynote speaker will be Congressman Randy Forbes, who represents the 4th Congressional District of Virginia. Since his constituents elected him to Congress in 2001, one of Randy’s key priorities has been to protect and defend our nation. As Chairman of the House Armed Services Seapower and Projection Forces Subcommittee, Randy is responsible for the research, development, acquisition, and sustainment of Navy and Marine Corps programs as well as the Air Force's bomber and tanker fleets. Randy’s position is central in developing the nation’s long-term strategies to meet our future security needs. As a result of his work on behalf of our military, in 2009, Randy became one of only a few individuals to have been honored with the highest civilian award offered by both the United States Army and the United States Navy.
