Chamber Urges Yes Vote on Light Rail

Chamber Urges Yes Vote on Light Rail
The Hampton Roads Chamber is a regional partner in the Light Rail Extension Campaign

The Hampton Roads Chamber is a regional partner in the Light Rail Extension Campaign.  With just a few weeks before the critical November 8 election, organizations are speaking to community groups, writing op-eds and letters to the editor and television commercials will soon begin to air.

Members are encouraged to pick up “vote yes” signs from the 6th floor of One Columbus Center in Town Center and volunteer to work the polls by emailing yeslightrail@gmail.com.

Moving light rail forward into Virginia Beach is broadly supported in the business community for a number of reasons:

  • The City of Virginia Beach owns the right of way to 13 miles of unimpeded railway.
  • The Commonwealth of Virginia has committed $155 million specifically for the Light Rail to Town Center extension.
  • The estimated cost of the extension is $234.1 million (includes $28.8 million in contingencies).
  • The City of Virginia Beach has already set aside its portion of the Light Rail investment.  Approximately $54 a year on a $300,000 home, from the real estate tax.
  • The State has also made $30 million loan available to Virginia Beach during construction.

Your vote matters as a close vote on the Light Rail Referendum is anticipated!  Please consider assisting with this important public policy issue in the weeks ahead.
