Free event offers glimpse of logistics jobs

NORFOLK, VA - Keeping the trains running on time is an often-heard expression, but that phrase can translate into a successful career. Logistics is the management of how materials and finished goods are delivered to where they are needed, in a timely, cost-efficient manner. And the market for those with degrees in logistics is growing.


Logistics Management will be the topic for the next session in the Career Exploration Series hosted by Saint Leo University South Hampton Roads Education Center’s Naval Station Norfolk Office. The session will be 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 28, at the Naval Station Norfolk Education Office, Building U-40, at the corner of Bellinger Boulevard and First Avenue.


Students, perspective students, and guests are invited to explore a career, discover economic trends, and learn of opportunities in logistics management.


The speaker will be Dr. Robert D. Pratt, a full-time assistant professor of management for Saint Leo University’s Fort Eustis Education Office. He retired as a GS15 after working for 36 years for the Department of Defense, holding various positions as a professor, director of policy and performance, program manager, contracting officer, and logistician.  While at the DOD, he taught for the Defense Acquisition University, Naval Post Graduate School, and the Naval Center for Acquisition Training.


Pratt, a U.S. Navy veteran, has held several adjunct faculty positions at the University of Virginia, USDA Graduate School, and Tidewater Community College. He has been a keynote speaker and presenter at various professional and academic conferences including, the American Management Association, Project Management Institute, and the National Defense Industrial Association. He holds: a Doctorate of Management from the University of Maryland; an MBA – University of Maryland University College; an MS in Technology Management – University of Maryland; a Post-Graduate Certificate (Contracting and Procurement Management) – Golden Gate University, and a BS in Public Administration.


Saint Leo University offers a bachelor of arts in business administration – logistics. Some of the careers those with a logistics degree can attain include logistics analyst; project manager; logistics engineer; supply chain manager; sales manager; and operations manager.
