SWaM Event to be Held at Fort Monroe At October 29

The Virginia Department of Small Business and Supplier Diversity in Hampton Roads will hold a certification workshop and one on one counseling sessions for Small Women and Minority (SwaM) owned businesses on October 29at Fort Monroe.

The certification workshop will be held from 10 a.m. to 12 noon at the Commanding General’s Residence and Garden, located at 33 Fenwick Road. It will be led by Angela Barber, business service manager for Hampton Roads and the Eastern Shore for the Virginia Department of Small Business and Supplier Diversity.

The workshop will cover the SWaM program, designations, the certification process, the new on-line application portal, required documents needed to apply, and how to use the certification to do business with the Commonwealth.  

Following the workshop at 1 p.m., participants can take part in one-on-one sessions on how to access business development resources, State financing programs (VSBFA), including technical assistance for conducting business with State agencies through SWaM Certification and eVA (Virginia’s Online Procurement Portal).

Small business owners who are looking to participate in Virginia’s specialized procurement and contracting opportunities are encouraged to become SWaM certified. The SWaM certification is a vehicle to promote economic growth of Virginia’s businesses. The certification can help businesses to grow sales among state agencies, public colleges and universities, local municipalities, and private sector firms that utilize the SWaM database. The state buys goods and services totaling more than $8 billion each year.
