Drumbeat for regional collaboration in Hampton Roads thrives

Young professionals are sustaining the discussion of regional collaboration in Hampton Roads.

Members of tHRive , the young professional program of the Hampton Roads Chamber, gathered at Virginia Wesleyan University to engage with a four-person panel of Hampton Roads leaders on the topic Aug. 30.

Many people in the region live, work, and play in different municipalities. Young professionals are a demographic that is seeking more flexibility and transparency across the region’s 17 jurisdictions. Some of the improvements young professionals are concerned about are regional issues that do not stop at city lines. 

“When we think about economic development, transportation and transit infrastructure and how those contribute to the quality of life in Hampton Roads, we can’t think in terms of individual cities,” said tHRive member Keith Darrow, a Virginia Department of Transportation project manager for the City of Norfolk. “As young professionals become more invested through home ownership, we want our cities to make decisions that are good for our entire region.”
