Hampton Roads Chamber Education Series Explores Effective Human Resources Procedures
Presented by Southern Bank, the Chamber Education Series provides local business leaders with monthly informational lunch and learn events on various topics of interest to the business community.

"Take the top three people who work for you and interview them again," said David Johnson of Paychex HR Services, "find out why they are a great asset to your company." This tip was one of many Johnson shared during the Chamber Education Series “Effective Hiring, Recruiting and Retention Procedures” September 12. Presented by Southern Bank, the Chamber Education Series provides business leaders with monthly informational lunch and learn events on various topics of interest.

Johnson's presentation reviewed labor laws, exempt and non-exempt employee status, onboarding procedures, and best practices to retain employees. "People really want to learn and know they are appreciated," said Johnson. He recommended managers provide feedback to their employees at least twice a year during a performance review.  Johnson also noted more consistent feedback is better, especially for millennials. "Sixty-nine percent of employees are not confident their manager will provide regular, constructive feedback”

Johnson highlighted the importance of a generous benefits package to attract great talent. Healthcare and 401k offerings topped the list of most requested benefits, but other options like telecommuting policies and free gym memberships were also listed as highly attractive to potential employees. "The information on benefit options was extremely helpful," said Valerie Stewart of Tidewater Staffing.  Rachel Zollweg of Wilson Law, PLC, also agreed calling the event, "informational and eye-opening."

The Chamber Education Series is sponsored by Southern Bank (Series Presenting Sponsor) and Farm Fresh (Series Hospitality Sponsor). The Chamber Education Series continues with "Refreshing Your Brand,” presented by Ken Wayland and Ha Koehler of Free Agents Marketing Thursday, October 12.
