What are your business's core values, goals, and overall mission?
Nearly half of all Virginia jobs are “middle skills” positions requiring more than a high school diploma but less than a two- or four-year college degree, yet less than 40 percent of our workforce has the required training to fulfill these openings. Because of this, area employers in high-demand medical, technical and construction industries struggle to find qualified employees.
Altierus Career College provides a unique and more affordable path for students that want to pursue careers in these fields. The Chesapeake campus is home to a dedicated community that fully equips students to thrive. We help students build strong professional and personal skills through 1:1 guidance, hands-on externships with local employers, and a community of students accountable to each other and faculty to help them stay on track throughout their journey.
Share some unique facts and business history? What makes your business stand out?
As a nonprofit, our approach is different from that of traditional community or for-profit colleges. Altierus is part of Zenith Education Group, a nonprofit career education system that is focused on helping students complete programs with less debt and ultimately secure a job in their field. The Altierus Chesapeake campus (formerly known as Everest Chesapeake) was acquired by Zenith in 2015 and immediately turned nonprofit. Since then, we have invested in curriculum upgrades, renovated labs and classrooms, instituted higher academic standards, and transformed our approach to deliver an affordable, high-quality education that addresses the needs of individual students.
What products or services do you offer companies or individuals?
Our Chesapeake campus offers programs for: Dental Assistant; Electrician, Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC); Medical Assistant; and Pharmacy Technician.
What are the greatest obstacles and/or challenges that your business has faced? How have you and your business overcome them?
Our students face challenges ranging from finding transportation to campus, to fulfilling family and child care responsibilities so that they are able to attend class. Our focus is helping them overcome these barriers so they can achieve success in the classroom and on the job.
What accomplishments are you most proud of?
Thus far in 2017, more than 70 percent of Altierus Career College, Chesapeake, graduates have secured jobs in their field. We are proud of the success of each and every one of our graduates.
What do you see for the future of your business?
Altierus will continue to focus on helping students succeed in the classroom and on the job. We anticipate ongoing investment in and expansion of our programs, and will adapt our offerings to help prepare graduates to meet the needs of area employers.
Why are you a member of the Hampton Roads Chamber?
We partner with area employers to stay abreast of industry changes, new curriculum needs and externship opportunities. We also partner with area organizations to help connect students to the resources that they need to ensure they are able to reach their personal and professional goals.
