“If an applicant has a bad application process, it’s going on social media,” said Kelly Lane, Director of Human Services of Casey Auto Group, in the second installment of the Human Resources for Business Leaders Series on September 26, 2018. Kelly Lane, Director of Human Services, Casey Auto Group; Karis Tanner, Manager of Talent Performance & Analytics, Dollar Tree; and Brian Winterstein, MBA-EVP, Chief Human Resources Officer, Coppermine Bakeries led today’s panel with their presentation, “Interviewing & Retention of Employees: A Panel Discussion with Experts to Keep Your Valuable Assets.”

Today’s competitive landscape means companies must find a way to stand out from the rest. How? “Make it easy. It’s important to make the application process as easy and accommodating as possible for the candidate – ask them what they are looking for and provide them with options,” said Tanner. The presenters stressed to not wait too long to contact a top candidate, go after them and stay connected. If they have a good experience upfront, they will spread that word to their families, friends and social media. Social media can make or break a business in today’s environment.   

The day continued with an engaging panel discussion on retaining top talent. “Small things go a long way,” said Winterstein. Tanner says “whether it is saying good morning every day, sending a card to a sick employee or asking how their day is, it’s crucial to let your employees know that you care for them.” With the devastation left by Hurricane Florence, over 1,200 Dollar Tree employees were affected. Tanner told the audience of how their team made calls to those 1,200 affected employees to make sure they were safe and had enough income to make it through the upcoming weeks. “These are the stories that travel to the next candidate. It’s a little bit of effort but a higher reward,” said Winterstein.

For small companies that cannot meet the salary requirements of their talent, leaders need to allow them to dip their hands into every aspect of the business. Lane says, “Allow them to grow their career.”
